About This Webinar

Hip fractures remain one of the most devastating and costly injuries facing older Veterans, with mortality rates as high as 32%, and 50% of survivors unable to regain independent mobility. Despite decades of investment in fall prevention, incidence among male Veterans continues to rise. Join Dr. David Shulkin, Ninth U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs as he presents the Veterans Hip Injury Prevention (V-HIP) framework: a layered strategy complementing the VHA’s existing fall-prevention infrastructure with injury mitigation technology at the moment of impact.

What We'll Cover

This session will cover the issue of fall injuries among Veterans, the clinical and economic case for action, and a phased implementation roadmap including how VA leadership, clinical champions, and Veterans Service Organizations can help to bring this injury mitigation model to VISNs nationwide.

Who Should Attend

  • VHA clinical leaders in geriatrics, primary care, orthopedics, and physical/occupational therapy
  • Falls prevention program staff
  • Care coordination teams
  • Health economists and VA finance/budget analysts
  • VISN administrators and program directors
  • Veterans Service Organization (VSO) representatives
  • Osteoporosis/bone health specialists

Learning Objectives

  • Understand why hip fractures among Veterans are still rising, even with strong prevention programs already in place.
  • See the true cost of a hip fracture, in dollars and in a Veteran's independence and quality of life.
  • Learn how preventing fractures instead of treating them could save the VA hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
  • Discover a promising new way to protect Veterans in the exact moment a fall happens.

About ActiveProtective

Active Protective Technologies, Inc. is at the forefront of medical device innovation, dedicated to enhancing the lives of older adults. Founded by Lieutenant Colonial Dr. Robert Buckman, an American trauma surgeon and inventor, the company's pioneering solution, the Tango Belt, is a prescription medical device indicated as an adjunct to standard of care that delivers active treatment during a serious hip impacting fall. Through its use of on-board sensors and algorithms, patient movement is actively monitored and automatically triggers deployment of an airbag to bilaterally surround the hips within 90 ms, attenuating ground impact forces on the hip that could otherwise result in serious hip injury.
